There are four guiding themes and principles that shape our practice in early years. These are:
• every child is a unique child. Our children are constantly learning and are resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. This is provided through opportunities that promote individual liberty as children are encouraged to make choices and take risks.
• children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships. Our democratic children voice their own opinions and value that of others, as they learn to share and take turns. Our children enjoy developing their own codes of conduct on a daily basis, as they work together on creating rules and boundaries that are embedded throughout.
• children learn and develop well in enabling environments. Our strong partnership between practitioners and parents/carers teach our children the principles of mutual respect and tolerance through the diverse environment provided. Children enjoy our parents coming into setting to share their culture and religious experiences.
• children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. Children with special educational needs and disabilities along with their families, are supported through working harmoniously together with multi agencies that ensure each child's individual needs are met. The 'What to Expect, When' guide is integrated to help support our parents to enhance children's learning and development at home.
The Areas of Learning and Development.
At Northfield Under 5’s we have strong relationships working in partnership with our parents and carers, to promote the learning and development for every child in our care, and to ensure that they are ready for school. Children learn through playing and exploring, active learning and thinking critically, these are called the 'Characteristics of Effective Learning'
The activities provided enable key opportunities for children to think creatively and flexibly, solve problems and link ideas, which supports learning across all areas. Our setting will establish the enabling conditions for rich play: space, time, flexible resources, choice, control, warm and supportive relationships.
Through working with our parents as partners, we aim to provide educational programmes involving activities and experiences to meet individual needs and interests that allow our children to develop skills and processes, broadening their knowledge and experiences. This in turn will enable them to achieve the Early Learning Goals (ELG’s) which summarise the knowledge, skills and understanding that all young children should have gained by the end of the Reception year. In order to achieve these goals children will have experiences in, access to and be taught through the seven areas of learning and development with all areas being important and inter-connected.
